Tapas - our internal fire

Tapas is the internal code of conduct (niyama) in yoga which helps us create discipline and release the fiery determination in us. The literal translation of this Sanskrit word is ‘discipline’.
At the core of tapas is the pursuit of self challenge. This can be big or small. It is personal and introspective. But just like with all of yoga, if we pursue these disciplines whilst looking inwards, this is how the greatest results can come.
For me, as I’ve immersed myself in my yoga journey, arm balances are the place for me to practice my tapas. Arm balances require a high-level of stilling the mind. It requires discipline to build strength. Concentration due to the number of simultaneous movements. Humility when we fall, so we are not defeated and keep going on.
The best thing about this is when the benefits emerge off the mat. Tapas on the mat can lead to higher levels of concentration of the mat. Higher levels of discipline and greater self-awareness. By constantly looking inwards as we practice these disciplines, we can release negative emotions from within us and balance ourselves more positively.
In the end, we do this to further ourselves. Arm balances are not just there to make nice shapes. They are a tool to make us grow.
